Stines files appeal of bond denial, argues trial court made legal errors
FRANKFORT, Ky. — Former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Mickey Stines is asking the Kentucky Court of Appeals to overturn a decision keeping him jailed without bond while he awaits trial in the killing of District Judge Kevin Mullins. Stines’ attorneys filed an appeal arguing Letcher Circuit Judge Christopher Corohn made several legal errors when he denied Stines’ request for bond following a June 5 evidentiary hearing. Two Pike residents plead guilty to federal drug charges
LONDON, Ky. — Two Pike County residents have entered guilty pleas in a federal drug case. Wayne Buzard, 57, of Zebulon Highway, and Cathy McKinney, 54, of Island Creek, were arrested in March as part of a roundup by Pikeville Police. The following month, they were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to distribute meth and possession of meth with the intent to distribute. Buzard was also charged with using a gun in a drug trafficking crime, while McKinney was charged with three counts of distributing meth. Buzard appeared in court Monday to plead guilty to […]

Three federal inmates charged with attempted murder
DEBORD, Ky. — Three inmates at the U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy in Martin County have been indicted in connection with a knife attack earlier this year. Gilbert Saldana, Edward Rodriguez and Alfred Fabrow are each charged with attempted murder. According to the indictment, back on July 6th, the three attacked another inmate with a shank, or handmade knife. The charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison if they are convicted.

Virginia wildlife officials report suspected hemorrhagic disease in deer
RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia wildlife officials are reporting several cases of deer mortality consistent with hemorrhagic disease. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources says it has received reliable reports of sporadic deer deaths from the disease, which is caused by a group of related viruses and commonly affects white-tailed deer in the Southeastern U.S. Hemorrhagic disease is transmitted by biting gnats and midges, with activity typically beginning in late summer and continuing until the first frost.
